Effects of Photoionization on Galaxy Formation

چکیده
We investigate the e ects of the observed UV background radiation on galaxy formation. Photoionization by UV radiation decreases the cooling rate of the gas in halos, so that objects with only large density contrasts can self-shield against the background radiation, thereby allowing the shielded neutral cores to cool and form stars. In the context of the CDM model, we use the criterion that self-shielding is essential for star formation to calculate the mass function of galaxies based on both Press-Schechter and the peaks formalisms. The ionizing UV radiation results in the inhibition of galaxy formation | we show the decrease in the number density of the galaxies quantitatively. We also nd that the merging in general is made ine cient by the UV photons through photoionization of the gas in the bigger system into which small objects are incorporated. The latter means that, in a merging dominated region, where the number density at the low-mass end (M b < 10 10 M ) is usually expected to decrease with time, the trend is reversed (the number of low-mass galaxies is more at lower redshifts z) due to the decreasing UV ux with time after z 2. We further discuss the implication of our results for the number counts of galaxies and possible evolution of the luminosity function of the galaxies. The Effects of Photoionization on Galaxy Formation — I: Model and Results at z=0
We develop a coupled model for the evolution of the global properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the formation of galaxies, in the presence of a photoionizing background due to stars and quasars. We use this model to predict the thermodynamic history of the IGM when photoionized by galaxies forming in a cold dark matter (CDM) universe. The evolution of the galaxies is calculated usin...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
متن کاملThe Effects of Photoionization on Galaxy Formation — II: Satellite Galaxies in the Local Group
We use a self-consistent model of galaxy formation and the evolution of the intergalactic medium to study the effects of the reionization of the universe at high redshift on the properties of satellite galaxies like those seen around the Milky Way. Photoionization suppresses the formation of small galaxies, so that surviving satellites are preferentially those that formed before the universe re...
متن کاملPhotoionization, Numerical Resolution, and Galaxy Formation
Using cosmological simulations that incorporate gas dynamics and gravitational forces, we investigate the influence of photoionization by an ultraviolet radiation background on the formation of galaxies. In our highest resolution simulations, we find that photoionization has essentially no effect on the baryonic mass function of galaxies at z = 2, down to our resolution limit of ∼ 5× 10M⊙. We d...
